Colville Lake
Colville Lake is probably one of the most traditional communities in the Northwest Territories. Located within the traditional homeland of the North Slavey Dene, organization of the community did not begin until 1962 when the Roman Catholic Mission was created. The community's economy is based on game hunting, fishing, and trapping with tourism playing a secondary role.
Colville Lake is 50km north of the Arctic Circle and 745 air km northwest of Yellowknife with a population of 151. Community members still hunt and trap off the land by dog-team and snowmobiles. The community accommodates twelve log cabins, a Bed and Breakfast lodge and two stores. Colville Lake is one of the more traditional communities occupied with mainly Sahtu Dene. It's traditional name is K'ahba Mi Tuwe, which means ptarmigan net. The community is accessible by air from Norman Wells year round and also accessible by winter road as well.
