Enrolling in the Sahtu Land Claim

The Sahtu Dene and Metis Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement has been passed nearly a decade ago and since then the Enrolment Process has changed for the better.

Why do I have to enrol?

Enrollment is a process by which an eligible Sahtu Dene and Metis becomes a participant in the Claim. The Agreement states that Participants must apply to be enrolled int he Claim by filling an application form with the Board. When you apply to enroll, you must identify one of the seven Aboriginal Communities that you wish to be enrolled with

Who is eligible to apply?

You are eligible to apply for enrollment if you are a Sahtu Dene and Metis person. This means that you, your parents, your grandparents oryour great grandparents are of Slavey, Hare or Mountain ancestry and resided in, or used and occupied, the settlement area on or before December 31, 1921. You also must be a Canadian citizen. You can apply for enrolment if you were adopted as a young person by a person of Sahtu Dene and/or Metis ancestry as described above, or if you are a descendant of such a person, and are a Canadian citizen. The provisions for such enrolment are set out in section 4.2.1 of the Comprehensive Claim Agreement.

How Can I apply?

You can either apply online by clicking on the Enrolment Application menu, the form must be filled completely not missing any areas speeding up the enrolment process, also required is a copy of your long-form birth certificate, not the small size, if you do not have a copy of your long form birth certificate you can apply by clicking here.
